AR Positioning At Corner Kicks

The following incident occurred during the Euro 2012 final group match between Denmark and Germany on Sunday 17 June 2012. The match finished 1—2. There were no YCs.

At a Denmark corner kick AR2 (Juan Carlos Yuste Jiménez) moves off his touch line to follow the flight of the ball. Here are the freeze frames:

Note the strange filter affecting the yellow colour of AR2 and the corner flag post, perhaps caused by the TV camera feed (but the Steward's yellow has not been affected)

Note the position of AR2. Why has AR2 moved off along the touch line to follow the ball?

Note: Carballo Gives No Cards, No Penalties, No Nothing

Compared with his actions 11 days earlier during the opening match (some observations here), Referee Carballo went to the other extreme and did not card any players and did not award any penalties. Is this enough to keep him and his team in contention? What about the positioning of AR2 at corner kicks? Will that affect the team's standing?

The match officials were:
Referee: Carlos Velasco Carballo (ESP)
Assistant referees: Roberto Alonso Fernández (ESP), Juan Carlos Yuste Jiménez (ESP)
Fourth official: Mark Clattenburg (ENG)
Additional assistant referees: David Fernández Borbalán (ESP), Carlos Clos Gómez (ESP)

1 comment:

  1. "Note the position of AR2. Why has AR2 moved off along the touch line to follow the ball?"
    - Because the assistant referees are advised to move on the line of the striker who is closest to the goal, as it is difficult to determine the last defender at a corner kick.
